Importance Of Team Building

In keeping with the "sports" theme of this week one very important aspect of any corporate and non-profit "team" is the ability to work cohesively together.  One simple and fun way to help accomplish this is to either plan a specific "team-building" event or to have a couple of team-building exercises at your next internal meeting/conference.

Why team-building?
  1. Helps improves your team's communication.  By breaking down internal barriers through various exercises your team is better able to communicate with one another which in turn creates an overall healthier work environment.  This then will turn into a more productive work place.
  2. Improves motivation and trust amongst your work colleagues.  When you are working towards a common-goal; you have to trust the person you are working with otherwise you probably won't complete the task that you have been given.
  3. At anytime you have a group of people working together on a project you have the ability to generate more ideas, thoughts, excitement about a project or a task in front of you.  At the end of the day you all are working TOGETHER to complete the assignment given.  This mutual exchange of ideas is the "end-game" for many team-building exercises!!

Types of team-building exercises or games for your next event can range from the simple to the more complex depending on how much time or effort you want to put into planning.  At a recent event where high school aged teenagers were ask to show their middle-aged school friends about the importance of maintaining identity and self-esteem during the high school years, Iqrah Asif (assistant at Capitol Event Firm) said they preformed a simple task of standing everyone in a circle and passing a beach ball with various quotes and statistics about high-school written on it.  The goal of the activity was to break the ice and inevitably create an atmosphere of communication!!

When asked about team-building Carol Nissenson of NOW THIS!  said " When most people think of teambuilding, their first images are of people falling backwards into each others arms, ropes courses and rock wall climbing. We offer activities that are appropriate and fun for all ages and abilities. Our Theatre Game Workshops use improv exercises to strengthen the skills and values most important to the client. Sometimes we combine this with our improvised musical show, customized with information about the group we are working with.  For clients with more time and bigger budgets, we offer an Interactive Treasure Hunt. Teams move from station to station solving clues and performing activities for points. These can be anything from creating an hors d’oeuvre to writing and performing a Rap, or acting in a soap opera. Some of the activities will be created around the organization’s work, such as a paper airplane competition for an aerospace company, or a chosen theme, e.g., a Patriotic Hunt on the National Mall.  Teambuilding doesn’t have to be stressful, competitive or physically challenging to be effective. Having a good time, and feeling appreciated and understood are also great tools for accomplishing your goals."

At Capitol Event Firm we have planned and helped facilitate team building activities ranging from mock game shows, scavenger hunts to charity races.  Find out today how we can help plan YOUR next Team building exercise.

After all there is no "me" it team.

Have an eventful day.
